Indigenous Specialization

Carla graduated from Laurentian University with a Bachelor of Honours in Indigenous Social Work and is registered with the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and is a member of the Ontario Association of Social Workers. Carla has developed training and delivered professional development seminars for teachers and Community Indigenous Organizations. Carla worked with the Indigenous School of Social Work at Laurentian University and Cambrian College Social Service Program.

Carla has 16 years of working with indigenous children and families. She has specific skills and specialization working with Indigenous and Western-based therapies. The braiding of services comes with a deep understanding of historical and present-day traumas, supporting families who wish to have a specialized service that supports Indigenous traditions and identity, while also recognizing the distinctions between nations and the strengths of individual clients. Carla continues to use holistic approaches that focus on the connection with family, self, community, spirituality and nature.

Carla works with client-centered approaches and teaches skills through Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and uses Indigenous Therapy techniques. She is aware of trauma-informed practice which supports healing with indigenous families who experience substance use disorders, depression, and anxiety, as well as the struggle with the development of life skills, and parenting.

What is it?

Indigenous Specialization is an area of social work that has a focus on supporting individuals and/or families who have been impacted by historical and or intergenerational trauma and challenges with identity and connection to self and how this affects a person’s ability to live holistically.

Adults and Families can benefit from learning indigenous ways of managing Western diagnoses, as well as integrating indigenous ones.

What you will learn

Families will learn skills to increase cultural identity and develop new understandings of daily living within the family unit and practice the tools learned through group and/ or one-on-one coaching and counseling through the Stages of Life model and Medicine Wheel teachings.
